Originally from Oconomowoc,
Stacy majored in chemistry at UW-Madison and earned her undergraduate
degree in 2008. She was a student in Dr. Rodney Schreiner’s
first semester general chemistry course and in Dr. Shakhashiri’s
second semester course. Later she joined WISL’s Science is Fun
Program. As a senior chemistry major she did research with Dr.
Shakhashiri to improve the effectiveness of lecture demonstrations.
She has decided to spend time before entering
medical school working with the WISL and is a valuable asset,
keeping everything running smoothly. She currently assists with
the Science is Fun demonstration class (enrollment of 24 students)
as an organizing force behind the scenes: scheduling, arranging
transportation, and making sure all the necessary materials
are on hand. Her work with WISL includes research on the “blue
bottle” experiment, which deals with the air-oxidation of glucose
in the presence of methylene blue reaction. Under the supervision
of WISL Honorary Fellow Laurens Anderson, Stacy hopes to gain
insight into what is produced during the experiment, and what
exactly occurs during the process.
She also tutors students in chemistry, and
again this summer as part of WISL’s Science in the City Program she
will head the Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity
Program for Learning Excellence (PEOPLE), working with middle
and high school students to help them experiment with chemistry.
In her free time, Stacy enjoys snowboarding
and sailing, and volunteers weekly at the local Ronald McDonald
House.
